Richard Wade from the Friendly Atheists blog proposes that we display billboards that are “truly innocuous, so that the only thing that might provoke ‘offense’ would be the word ‘atheist’ in the billboard sponsor’s name,” like the ones above, instead of the more aggressive, in-your-face messages.

Hmm, I find this to be an interesting idea. Underlying message: “We’re just people who like simple things as much as you. Tolerance, please?” I’m not a big fan of atheists going on the attack against others.

I think maybe it’d be cool if there was also an underlying message of wonder about the universe and delight in things being things… like, I’m not fond of the “Buses carry many people” because it seems a bit hurdurr, but the rest… “Please Drive Carefully” suggests caring about others, while the rest is “WHEE! Chocolate! Clouds!” 

Maybe “People are awesome! Smile!” or maybe a picture of a starfield with “The universe is really cool!” or whatever. 

I agree with this. I like the idea of showing that atheists are just people who are caring and curious about the world. And toning down on the aggressive ads is a huge necessity.
